Perez Picks Up First Skyline Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week

NEW YORK — Mercedes Perez (San Antonio, Texas/William Howard Taft) of the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's basketball team was named Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week. The announcement was made as part of the league's first weekly report of the season on Tuesday.

In her first collegiate contest against Pratt last Wednesday, Perez totaled 11 points. She added five assists, four rebounds, and as many steals en route to the Bears' 70-55 triumph. Perez followed up with a 10-point showing on Friday afternoon against Maine Maritime and was two assists away from registering her first collegiate double-double. The Texas native also pulled four boards in the contest.

Perez averaged 10.5 points, 6.5 assists, and four rebounds in the two-game span. The honor is the first of her career and the first Rookie of the Week selection since teammate Aaniya Telford earned the accolade last January.

Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) earned a place on the conference weekly honor roll following a week where she averaged 21 points, five rebounds, and three assists.

Perez and the Bears will spend this weekend at the Hunter College Tip-Off Tournament. On Friday, November 17, they will play Widener University at 5 pm before taking on the host Hawks on Saturday, November 18 at 1 pm.
