Women’s Basketball Picks Up First Skyline Win at Yeshiva

NEW YORK — Behind 20-plus-point efforts from Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and Destiny Hurt (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka), the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's basketball team defeated Yeshiva University, 76-73, on Sunday afternoon from the ARC Arena at Baruch College. The triumph marks the Bears' first in Skyline Conference play this season.

Donovan totaled 23 points, a season-high for the sophomore, while Hurt finished with 21 points; her third game scoring north of 20 in 2023-24.

How it Happened

Capitalizing on Maccabee turnovers, Mercedes Perez's (San Antonio, Texas/William Howard Taft) contributed eight points in the first quarter, propelling the Bears to a 19-17 lead. The second quarter featured a 13-0 scoring stretch, during which the navy and gray surged to an 18-point advantage at 39-21. Donovan's 4-for-4 shooting from beyond the arc in the quarter further bolstered the Bears, establishing a 41-29 halftime lead.

The Bears managed to maintain their lead despite facing a Yeshiva comeback attempt in the third quarter. A 7-0 run in the middle of the period narrowed the SJBK lead to five, and a pair of Yuval Nitzan free throws brought it down to one, 53-52. A triple from Hurt on the wing brought the advantage back to four, 56-52, to start the fourth quarter.

The hosts held the hot shooting hand for much of the fourth as a 14-0 outburst saw the Maccabees possess a 69-62 lead. Grace Kennedy (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) drained a three-ball to begin a 14-4 run to regain the lead and hold off Yeshiva, 76-73.

For the Bears

  • 18 of Donovan's 23 points came from three-point land. She was a pair of rebounds away from a double-double and had four assists.

  • Hurt had 10 rebounds to go with her 21 points. She also had three assists.

  • Perez logged 16 points and pulled seven boards while dishing out seven assists.

  • Shanna Bliss (Astoria, N.Y./Bryant) collected 10 caroms and scored seven points.
