Lehman Upends Women's Soccer With Two Quick Strikes

BRONX, N.Y – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team gained an early lead, but two quick goals from Lehman College gave the Lightning a 2-1 victory in non-conference action on Monday evening at South Field.

The Lady Bears (1-6) suffer their second straight loss while the Lightning (6-5) win their second straight to move above the .500 mark. It was the second meeting between the two squads this season, both in favor of Lehman.

Senior Christina Abbate (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) tallied the lone goal for the Lady Bears in the 32nd minute finishing a through ball from junior Shannon Rom (Rockaway Point, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) that set up a one-on-one with the keeper. Abbate's goal was the first of the season and the second of her career.

But the SJC lead would be short-lived as Lehman countered with two goals in a span of less than four minutes to take the lead for good. Juliana Generoso scored the equalizer in the 33rd minute, her 11th of the season and Jean Fisher scored the game winner in the 36th minute, chesting in a ball off a cross.

That would be all the scoring in the contest as the teams played to a scoreless second stanza and the Lady Bears could not find the equalizer.

For the contest, both teams fired eight shots a piece, with the hosts more accurate placing six on frame against three for the Lady Bears. Senior goalkeeper Nicole Farinella (East Patchogue, N.Y/Bellport) finished with four saves in defeat.

St. Joseph's resumes Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a road tilt against Sarah Lawrence College at Tibbetts Field on Wednesday, October 2nd, starting at 6 p.m.
