Women's Soccer Suffers First Loss of the Season Falling to Maritime

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - After a scoreless tie at halftime, Maritime College emerged with three second-half scores for a 3-0 win over the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team Tuesday night at Reinhart Field in Throggs Neck, N.Y.

The Bears (4-1) had their four-game winning streak snapped after being deadlocked at the intermission, while the Privateers (3-5-1) scored three unanswered for their third win of the year.

Julianna Avitto scored two goals for Maritime, while Marisa Athan notched a goal and a assist for the victory. Goalie Kristin Hoar picked up the shutout win with six saves on the evening.

Nicole Farinella (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport HS) suffered her first defeat on the year despite stopping 12 shots, while Shannon Fahy (Breezy Point, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) had two shots on goal for the Lady Bears in a losing effort.

The first half was a hard-fought defensive battle, with the two sides remaining in a scoreless draw into the halftime break. Maritime broke through in the second half, when Athan scored the first goal of the game at the 54th minute. Ten minutes later, Avitto scored her first goal on a quick one-timer from Athan to extend their lead.  Avitto would add a final tally in the final minute of the game to close out the win.

The Privateers outshot the Lady Bears 24-11, while final corner kicks were 11-4 also in favor of Maritime. 

The Lady Bears have a day off before returning to the pitch against York (N.Y.) on Thursday, September 25 at 5 p.m. at Aviator Field.
