Caruso's Late Goal Pushes Women's Soccer Past Lehman

BROOKLYN, N.Y.—Christina Caruso (Queens, N.Y./St. John's Prep) provided some late heroics with the game-winning goal as the St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) women's soccer team edged out Lehman College, 1-0, on Tuesday night at the Aviator Sports and Events Center.

With the win, the Lady Bears (8-2) continue their best start in their three-year history, winning their third consecutive game.

The first half saw a great defensive battle between both teams, ending the half in a scoreless tie. Nicole Farinella (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport HS) made two of her seven saves in the span of a minute to keep the game scoreless. The senior keeper would notch her second straight shutout, and her fourth of the season.

In the second half, there was more of the same with stingy defense from both squads. With the game nearing overtime, the freshman midfielder Caruso received a great pass from Shannon Rom (Breezy Point, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) and put the deciding goal past the keeper for her fifth of the season at the 86th minute.

Stephanie Gonzalez made five saves in a losing effort for Lehman (6-4-1).

St. Joseph's outshot Lehman 12-10, outshooting them in both halves six to five. The Lightning had a 7-4 advantage throughout the game on corner kicks in the loss.

The Lady Bears get back on the pitch Thursday, October 9th when they take on King's (N.Y.) in a key Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and United States Collegiate Athletic Association matchup. Game time is at 6 p.m. at the Aviator Sports and Events Center and kicks off a doubleheader with the men following at 8 p.m.
