Women's Soccer Notches First Win of Season Defeating Medgar Evers

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Led  by a six-goal outburst from Cansu Usta (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fort Hamilton), the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team picked up their first win of the season cruising past Medgar Evers College, 16-1, on Monday evening at Aviator Field.

How it Happened

  • Usta got the Lady Bears on the board first in just 2:46 in and found the back of the net two more times in the next two minutes to complete her first hat trick of the season in under five minutes. Usta scored the fourth SJC goal and scored the first two SJC second-half goals.
  • Christine Emigholz put the Lady Bears up 5-0 in the 24th minute with her first collegiate tally, before Kristen Candelaria scored her first two collegiate goals in the28th and 36th minutes, followed by a Medgar Evers own goal gave St. Joseph's an 8-0 lead at the break.
  • In the 64th minute, Sciancia Metelus would spoil the shutout dribbling up the right side and finding the top right corner, cutting St. Joseph's lead to 13-1.
  • St. Joseph's dominated possession throughout the contest maintaining a 37-6 shot advantage.

For the Lady Bears

  • Usta also added an assist and all seven of her shots were on goal
  • Freshman Christine Emigholz scored her first two collegiate goals and dished out three assists.
  • Senior Shannon Fahy and sophomore Christina Caruso both scored two goals and assisted on two others
  • Senior Pamela Chernyakhovsky distributed four assists and scored a goal.
  • Playing in her first collegiate soccer game, sophomore Kristen Candelaria scored two goals and had an assist.
  • Freshman Izabella Armstrong made four saves and picked up her first win in goal.

For the Cougars

  • Sciancia Metelus goal was the first goal of the season for the Cougars.
  • Kenia Diaz made 11 saves in taking the loss in net.

The Lady Bear Facts

  • St. Joseph's set a new team single-game record with 13 assists.
  • Usta's six goals matches a single-game record which she has set three times, the last time against Medgar Evers last October. Shannon Fahy holds the other six-game effort against Berkeley last September.

Next up for St. Joseph's

The Lady Bears will return to Skyline Conference play taking on SUNY College at Old Westbury in a road game on Friday, September 25 starting at 4 p.m.
