Maritime Sails Past Women's Soccer

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Freshman Izabella Armstrong (Farmdale, Ohio/Badger H.S.) made 18 saves for the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team but the offense was held scoreless and Maritime College (N.Y.) came away with an 8-0 victory in Skyline Conference action on Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened

  • Kathleen Burns opened up the scoring in the 18th minute, finishing off a pass in the box from Courtney Salatto, which would end up being a theme in today's game.
  • Gayle Woods received a through ball for a breakaway from Salatto in the 26th minute to put Maritime up by two.
  • 11 minutes later, Burns scored on a breakaway of her own for her second of the day to give Maritime a 3-0 lead at the break.
  • The first goal of the second half came off of a pretty give and go between Krista Deleva and Courtney Salatto.
  • A minute later Gayle Woods found her second goal of the game as she was able to put back a rebound that had gone off the post off a shot by Salatto.
  • Another minute after that, Woods created a turnover near the Bear's net and finished off her hat trick putting Maritime up by six.
  • In the 54th minute Courtney Salatto scored a breakaway goal of her own to push the lead to seven. 
  • Finally, Julianna Avitto scored a pretty goal in the 76th minute as she cut to the right at the top of the box and sent a shot into the upper left corner of the net for the final tally.

For the Bears

  • Goaltender Izabella Armstrong had a very good day, despite of the score. She finished with 18 saves on 26 shots faced.
  • Pamela Chernyakhovsky finished with six shots, four of them finding the target.
  • Shannon Fahy played a strong game, getting two shots on net and being as involved offensively as anyone on the Bears.

For the Privateers

  • Five different players finished with at least a goal in the game.
  • Kathleen Burns finished with a hat trick and two assists. While Courtney Salatto had a goal and four assists.
  • Maritime took 41 shots in the game, 26 finding the net.
  • Starting goaltender Cammie Havens earned the win and improved to 4-5.

The Bear Facts

  • Maritime improves to 2-0 in the all-time series and first meeting in the Skyline Conference.
