Women’s Soccer Blanks Yeshiva To Post First Win For Coach Lawson

NEW YORK — A Destiny Marino (Howard Beach, N.Y./Christ the King) in the eighth minute followed by the first collegiate tallies by Rebecca Bollmann (Broad Channel, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) and Merima Kokale (Staten Island, N.Y./New Utrecht) powered the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Yeshiva University on Thursday afternoon.

The Basics

  • Final Score: St. Joseph's 3, Yeshiva 0
  • Records: St. Joseph's (0-3), Yeshiva (0-6)
  • Location: New York, N.Y. – Randall's Island Field 71

How It Happened

  • The Bears applied the pressure early and on the third earned corner kick in the 8th minute Rebecca Bollmann served a ball to Destiny Marino on the near side who volleyed it into the back of the net for her first of the season.
  • Bollmann would score her first collegiate goal 14 minutes later receiving a pass in the box from Christine Emigholz and flicked it past the keeper. St. Joseph's carried the 2-0 lead into the intermission and maintained a 9-2 shot advantage over the opening 45 and a 6-3 edge in corners.
  • Despite playing against a wind that picked up midway through the second stanza, St. Joseph's found their way in on net and gained several scoring opportunities, but only capitalized on one goal when sophomore Merima Kokale took a pass in front of goal mouth from Emigholz in the 64th minute and punched it past the keeper for her first collegiate marker.

For the Bears

  • Emigholz led all players with six shots (two on goal) and finished with two assists. She now leads the team with four points on the season.
  • In addition to their first career goals, Kokale and Bollmann fired off four shots, all of Kokale's finding the target.
  • Junior defender Marino nets her second career goal—her first game-winner—after one tally and three assists her freshman season.
  • Senior Kristen Candelaria faced just five Maccabee shots and saved the lone shot on target for her first career shutout.
