Second-Half Surge Sends Women’s Soccer Past Brooklyn College

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Sophomore Mia Castaneda (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) scored four goals in a span of 30 minutes to lift the St. Joseph's University, NY (Brooklyn) women's soccer team to a 5-0 triumph over borough rivals Brooklyn College in a non-conference road test on Wednesday evening.

How It Happened

The opening 45 saw a scoreless battle between the two Kings County squads, but the Bears (1-1) controlled play with a 9-3 shooting advantage and the defense preventing the Bulldogs (0-2) from putting any shots on frame.

SJBK earned two quick corners early in the second half before Castaneda broke the deadlock 12 minutes in. The Bears quickly padded their lead one minute later as Castaneda set up her high school teammate Katherine Barrios (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) for her first collegiate goal in the 58th minute.

The Bears dominated the rest of the half finishing with a 12-2 shot advantage in the stanza and Castaneda scoring in the 71st, 86th, and 87th minutes to put the game away.

For the Bears

  • Castaneda scored all four tallies on seven shots to record her second collegiate hat trick and added an assist.
  • Freshman Barrios fired off four shots en route to her first collegiate goal.
  • Senior Alexis Breen (Union Beach, N.J./Keyport) had three shots (one on goal).
  • Freshmen Sophia Monteiro (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) and Casey Hobbs (Surprise, Ariz./Valley Vista) both picked up an assist on the third and fifth goals for their first collegiate points.
  • Freshman Julia Marin (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) made two saves to pick up her first collegiate win in goal.
  • It was the first collegiate head coaching victory for Interim Head Coach Lisa LoSchiavo '21.
