USMMA Narrowly Clips Women’s Soccer

 

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — In their first-ever meeting on the pitch, the St. Joseph's University, NY (Brooklyn) women's soccer team dropped a narrow 2-1 decision to the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday afternoon from Aviator Field.

Mia Castaneda (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) scored the lone goal for the Bears (3-7-1, 1-5), her 13th of the season.

How it Happened

Less than five minutes into the match, the Mariners (6-4-1, 1-4-1) scored on their first shot courtesy of Emma Cox. The two sides combined for 12 shots in the first half, with the Bears outshooting the visitors 7-5, but the contest remained 1-0 heading into the half.

Just past the hour mark, at 62', Castaneda sprinted past the USMMA defense and fired off the equalizing goal. The stalemate lasted 13 minutes as the Mariners found the game-winner in the 76'.

For the Bears

  • Castaneda took a game-high seven shots with all but one finding the face of goal.

  • Ashley Pintado (Jackson Heights, N.Y./Christ the King) took three shots and Alexis Breen (Union Beach, N.J./Keyport) took two.

  • The Bears outshot the Mariners, 15-8 while narrowly winning the possession battle, 51-49%.
