Women's Soccer's Halftime Lead Not Enough Against St. Joseph's (Long Island)

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Despite holding on to a 2-1 halftime lead, thanks to goals from Mia Castaneda (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and Katherine Barrios (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck), the St. Joseph's University, NY (Brooklyn) women's soccer team fell 5-2 to St. Joseph's University, NY (Long Island) on Tuesday night from Aviator Field.

How it Happened

The Golden Eagles (7-4-2, 6-3) saw chances in the early stages of the match, including a shot off the woodwork, but could not capitalize. At 16', they found the breakthrough courtesy of Emily O'Mara. Seven minutes later, Castaneda drew the match level when her free kick from beyond the 18-yard-box found the upper V. Shortly after, a poor clearance from the Long Island goalkeeper found Barrios, who fired off the Bears' (record) go-ahead goal on a shot from 25 yards out, on her first touch, going into the break.

Within the opening minute of the second half, Emily Farrington scored Long Island's equalizer. Five minutes shy of the hour mark, she converted a spot kick to give the visitors a 3-2 lead with O'Mara doubling the lead to 4-2 at 59' on a corner kick. The Golden Eagles completed their 5-2 triumph with another goal coming off a set piece in the 85'.

For the Bears

  • Castaneda scored her XX goal of the season while Barrios bagged her fifth.

  • The pair combined for five of the team's seven shots.

  • In goal, Julia Marin (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) registered five saves while Alexis Breen (Union Beach, N.J./Keyport) stopped three shots.
