Castaneda Hat Trick Leads Women's Soccer to Senior Night Victory Over Maritime

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Sophomore Mia Castaneda (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) finished with her third hat trick of the season as the St. Joseph's University, NY (Brooklyn) women's soccer team earned a 6-1 victory over SUNY Maritime College on Saturday night at Aviator Field.

Seniors Alexis Breen (Union Beach, N.J./Keyport) and Samantha Quinonez (Woodside, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) were honored in Senior Night ceremonies prior to kickoff. Both made the start, playing the full 90, with Breen making three saves between the sticks.

How it Happened

Castaneda got on the board early when Katherine Barrios (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) feed her a ball on a second-minute counterattack for the opening goal. She doubled the Bears' (5-9-1, 3-7) lead in the 21' when she intercepted a Privateer (3-11, 2-8) pass in their defensive half and fired a shot from the top of the box. Maritime would spoil the early shutout two minutes later on a headed goal from a corner kick before Ashley Pintado (Jackson Heights, N.Y./Christ the King) restored the two-goal advantage, at 35', to go into the break with a 3-1 lead.

Barrios again found Castaneda, just shy of the hour mark, to complete her hat trick. Barrios would add her name to the scoresheet with just under 16 minutes remaining in the match as she juked a defender and the goalkeeper and shot in front of an empty net, increasing the lead to 5-1. With five minutes left, Casey Hobbs (Surprise, Ariz./Vista Valley) got in on the scoring; receiving a pass from Castaneda and finding the inside of the post confirming the 6-1 result.

For the Bears

  • Castaneda is the first Bear with three hat tricks in a season since Deserae Sequeira in 2018. She also finished with a pair of assists.

  • Barrios also had two assists. She found the back of the net for the second consecutive match.

  • Hobbs scored her third goal of the season, her first since September 24.
