McMaster's Three Golds Leads Lady Bears to 2nd Place at HVWAC Championships

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's swimming team collected 12 medals and took home a second place finish at the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference Invitational Championships held at the College of New Rochelle Natatorium on Sunday morning.

Senior Kristen McMaster (Brooklyn, NY/Fontbonne Hall) paced the Lady Bears medalling in all four events she swam, bringing home three gold medals and one silver medal.  McMaster earned her golds in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:24.01), a new school record; the 50 yard freestyle (28.66), two hundredths off her own record; and leading off the 200 yard freestyle relay (2:02.11), teaming up with fellow seniors Catherine Muldoon (Brooklyn, NY/Fontbonne Hall), Elizabeth Fiorella (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) and Alison Nunziata (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney).

Fiorella also earned an individual bronze medal setting a personal best in the 200 yard freestyle (2:32.72) and improved her best time in the 500 yard freestyle (7:34.01). Nunziata also medaled in the 50 yard freestyle (29.45) setting a new personal best to take bronze.  In her first time swimming the longest event of the program, Muldoon lowered the school record in the 1000 yard freestyle (15:13.82), finished just outside medal position.

Junior Laura Sonnylal (Richmond Hill, NY/Archbishop Molloy) was the second-leading medal winner for the Lady Bears, claiming bronze in the 100 yard butterfly (1:25.32) and 100 yard backstroke (1:20.62) and helping the 200 yard medley relay to a silver medal.

Freshman Rebecca Sacerio (Brooklyn, NY/Lincoln) and junior Maureen Donohue (Rochester, NY/Rochester) rounded out the individual medalists with bronze in the 200 yard individual medley (3:01.14) and 100 yard breaststroke (1:26.65), respectively.

The Lady Bears overall had a strong showing setting season or personal best times in 14 races.

Sarah Lawrence capturing the team championship for the second straight year winning eight of the 11 events.

The Lady Bears return to the pool on Wednesday, February 1st on the road against the College of St. Elizabeth starting at 7 p.m.
