Records Fall as Women's Swimming Comes From Behind to Defeat St. Elizabeth

MORRISTOWN, NJ – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's swimming team swept the final three events to complete a comeback victory, 52-42, over the College of St. Elizabeth on the road on Wednesday night, avenging a five-point loss to the Eagles just five days ago.

St. Elizabeth took four of the opening five events before the first break, despite season-best times from seniors Alison Nunziata (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) in the 50 yard free (29.44) and Catherine Muldoon (Brooklyn, NY/Fontbonne Hall) in the 1000 yard free (15:05.1), Muldoon improving her school record she set in Sunday's HVWAC Invitational Championships.

Senior Elizabeth Fiorella (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) and junior Maureen Donohue (Rochester, NY/Rochester) took the top two spots in the 200 yard free, Donohue setting a personal-best time of 2:48.6, which pulled the Lady Bears within two points through three events.  But the Eagles jumped ahead by as many as 13 points before Kristen McMaster(Brooklyn, NY/Fontbonne Hall) lowered her school record in the 100 yard free (1:03.9) to start closing the gap.

In the 500 yard free, Muldoon improved another of her school records, taking first place with a time of 7:16.1 and Jaclyn Kennedy (Breezy Point, NY/Fontbonne Hall) took second (7:44.3) to pull the Lady Bears within four, 41-37, entering the final break.

The duo that swept the 200 free also swept the 100 yard breaststroke, this time Donohue (1:26.1) coming in first and Fiorella (1:34.8) beating her personal season-best by five seconds to edge out the Eagles by less than two seconds, which gave the Lady Bears their first lead of the meet, 45-42, entering the final relay.

In the 200 yard freestyle, the senior relay team of McMaster, Muldoon, Fiorella and Nunziata brought home the victory taking first place by over 20 seconds, clocking in at 2:05.6.

St. Joseph's (4-9) will close out their 2012 campaign at Brooklyn Technical High School to celebrate senior night in a meet to be announced in the near future.
