Lady Bears Swimming Defeats Lehman in Home Opener; Bears Club Swimming Makes Debut

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Winning in 10 of the 11 events, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's swimming team notched their first win of the season defeating Lehman College 72-22 on Wednesday evening at Brooklyn Technical High School.

The men's club swimming team also made an impressive intercollegiate debut competing in six exhibition events, collecting one victory and edged out of a win by less than a second in two other events.

Freshman Morgan Summers (Bellerose, NY/St. Mary's) continued to make waves in her rookie campaign, leading the Lady Bears to three victories, bolstering both the 200 yard medley and free relays and setting another school record in the 200 yard IM (2:41.41), lowering the mark set by 11 seconds set last week by fellow rookie Tina Wong (Brooklyn, NY/HS of Telecommunications Art and Technology).  Wong also improved upon her time to help the Lady Bears go one-two in the IM and added another victory in the 500 yard freestyle.

Sophomores Erin Collins (Breezy Point, NY/Fontbonne Hall) and Rebecca Sacerio (Brooklyn, NY) also brought two individual wins for the Lady Bears. Collins set season-best times in the 50 yard freestyle (31.41) and 100 yard freestyle (1:12.12), edging out Lehman by six-tenths of a second. Sacerio posted a season-best time in the 100 yard backstroke (1:19.00) and won the 200 yard freestyle (2:39.00) in her first time swimming the event in her collegiate career.

Senior Maureen Donohue (Rochester, NY/Rochester) and sophomore Jaclyn Montana (Brooklyn, NY/Bay Ridge Prep) secured the other two individual wins for St. Joseph's in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:28.35) and 100 yard butterfly (1:26.47), respectively.

For the men, freshman Andrey Moseyenko (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) captured the lone individual win in the 100 yard butterfly (57.78). Freshman Thomas Kennedy (Breezy Point, NY/St. Edmund Prep) was edged out of victory by 0.41 seconds in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:26.47) and freshman Patrick Ward (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) also took second in the 100 yard backstroke (1:11.75).  The trio teamed up with Dylan Larkin (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) and were edged out of the opening 200 yard medley relay (2:03.61) by .17 seconds.

The Lady Bears (1-2) dive back into the pool on Friday, December 7th to face sibling rivals St. Joseph's College (Long Island) for the annual "East vs. West" tripleheader with the men's and women's basketball teams. Start time is slated for 3 p.m. at the Danzi Athletic Center.
