Lady Bears Swimming Captures Second at HVWAC Championships

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's swimming team collected 10 medals en route to a second place finish at the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) Swimming Championships on Sunday morning at the College of New Rochelle Wellness Center.

Freshman Morgan Summers (Bellerose, NY/St. Mary's) paced the Lady Bears capturing a maximum four medals, including the only gold for St. Joseph's in the 100-yard backstroke (1:10.17). Summers added silvers in the 200-yard individual medley (2:38.25, Lady Bear record) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:44.45) and 200-yard freestyle relay.

Freshman Tina Wong (Brooklyn, NY/HS of Telecommunications Art and Technology) also collected medals in all four events she swam, teaming with Summers in the 200-yard freestyle relay and earning silvers in the 1000-yard freestyle (14:46.15) and 100-yard butterfly (1:17.89, Lady Bear record) and a bronze in the 500-yard freestyle (7:09.79)

Sophomore Rebecca Sacerio (Brooklyn, NY/Lincoln) earned two individual medals, setting a Lady Bear record in the 200-yard freestyle (2:31.63) good for silver and nabbed bronze in the 100-yard backstroke (1:20.18).

Senior Laura Sonnylal (Richmond Hill, NY/Archbishop Molloy) and sophomore Jaclyn Montana (Brooklyn, NY/Bay Ridge Prep) also brought home two medals each rounding out the 200-yard freestyle relay team with Summers and Wong. Sonnylal earned individual silver in the 50-yard freestyle (30.71) while Montana grabbed bronze in the 100-yard butterfly (1:24.49).

Following the championships, Summers, Wong and Sonnylal were named to the 2012-13 HVWAC All-Conference Team.

The second place finish is the fourth in as many years for the Lady Bears. Sarah Lawrence won 10 of the 11 events in securing their fourth-straight team championship. 

The Lady Bears (5-5) will conclude their 2012-13 campaign on Friday, February 8th hosting Cedar Crest College. St. Joseph's will look to capture their second winning season in their five-year history and will celebrate senior night. Start time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Brooklyn Technical High School
