Women's Swimming Captures HVIAC Invitational Title

BROOKLYN, N.Y.—Winning five of the 11 events, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's swimming team captured their first Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) Invitational title on Saturday morning at the CNR Wellness Center.

It is the first HVIAC Invitational victory for the Lady Bears who took home runner up honors the last five years.

Freshman Brianna Minogue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) paced the Lady Bears with two individual event victories, winning both the 50-yard freestyle (29.70) and 100-yard freestyle (1:07.32).

Junior Morgan Summers (Bellerose, N.Y./St. Mary's) won the 100-yard backstroke in dominating fashion by nearly 10 seconds with a time of 1:13.60. She also captured second place in the 200-yard freestyle and lowered her own school record in the event to 2:24.84.

Junior Jillian O'Hara (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) rounded out the four individual event victories with a triumph in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:29.38). She also set a personal best in the 200-yard individual medley posting a time of 2:45.81.

The Lady Bears took an early lead in the meet as Julia Dineen (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Saviour), Erin Collins (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall), Tina Wong (Brooklyn, N.Y./HS of Telecommunications Art and Technology) and Victoria Benalcazar (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) teamed up to win the opening 200-yard medley relay with a season-best time of 2:21.13 for a 17-second triumph.

The group would later contribute crucial points to the team total collecting second and third place finishes in the individual events. Wong swam a personal-best 2:45.69 in the 200-yard IM and an 8:17.17 in the 500-yard freestyle taking a pair of second place finishes. Dineen also collected second place points in the 100-yard backstroke (1:23.46) and 1000-yard freestyle (15:46.49), her first time swimming the event in her career.

Benalcazar posted a personal-best 1:13.17 to take second in the 100-yard freestyle and also took third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:50.93) in her first time swimming the event. Collins chipped in third place points in the 50-yard freestyle (32.25) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:37.81).

In the final event of the meet, Jennifer Moncino (Ridgewood, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy), Lauren GaNun (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall), Jessica Sacco (Brooklyn, NY/HS of Telecommunications Art and Technology) and Shannon Rom (Breezy Point, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) teamed up to finish in second place in the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:33.16).

Overall, St. Joseph's won the team title with 100 points, followed by The College of New Rochelle with 65 points and rounded out by the College of St. Elizabeth with 34 points.

The Lady Bears will close out their 2014-15 campaign with a Senior Night celebration tonight at Brooklyn Technical High School, hosting The College of New Rochelle at 7:30 p.m.
