Lady Bears Tennis Splits Over Long Weekend, Kramer Named HVWAC Player of the Week

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - St. Joseph's travelled to New Rochelle on Friday afternoon to defeat the College of New Rochelle by a score of 5-4 in a HVWAC conference match. The win improved the Lady Bears conference record to 1-2 and are currently in 4th place.

Playing a key role in the win was senior Danielle Kramer (Queens, NY / Martin Luther) who teamed up with Darcy Crimi(Queens, NY / Christ the King) for an 8-5 win at 1st doubles and defeated Christine Locke at 1st singles by a score of 10-7 to account for 2 of the Lady Bears 5 wins. Both wins were the first career wins for Kramer at 1st singles and 1st doubles. For her performance, Kramer was also given HVWAC Player of the Week honors, the first by a Lady Bear this season.

Also contributing to the win were Mirlinda Krivac (Brooklyn, NY) and senior Elaine Lupenowicz (Brooklyn, NY / Environmental) who also won at 3rd singles (10-8) and 5th singles (10-3), respectively, and teamed up to win at 2nd doubles (8-5).

On Monday, the Lady Bears hosted Bay Path College at the US National Tennis Center in Flushing. Unfortunately, they could not keep the winning streak alive as they were shut out 0-9. The most exciting match of the day was turned in by senior Jennifer Safi(Brooklyn, NY / Bishop Kearney) lost the first set to Kara Fox 4-6 but stormed back in the second set to win 6-1 and send the match to a super tiebreaker. Neither player could gain more than a 2 point lead in the tiebreaker, and Safi had match point at 10-9, however Fox eluded defeat with a fortunate bounce off the net cord and then took the next two points and Safi lost the tiebreaker 10-12.

The Lady Bears currently stand at 2-4 and return to action on Wednesday night where they host College of St. Elizabeth in a conference matchup at the US National Tennis Center at 6:00 PM. St. Elizabeth stands at 5th place in the conference and is 0-2 in the HVWAC.
