Pierre and LoBosco Win Deciding Point in Women's Tennis First Victory of Season Over CCNY

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Powered by a pair of victories from sophomores Tathiana Pierre (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Ford) and Deirdre Lavelle (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall), the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's tennis team earned an exciting 5-4 victory over non-conference foe CCNY for their first triumph of the season on Wednesday evening at the USTA National Tennis Center.

Lady Bears head coach TC Huen celebrated his birthday in style earning his first collegiate win.

St. Joseph's (1-7, 0-2 HVIAC) snaps a seven-match losing streak to begin the season while CCNY (4-5, 3-4 CUNYAC) has now lost two matches in a row following a three-match winning streak.

The match was tightly contested as neither team built more than a one point lead throughout with the score being tied at 3-3 heading into the pivotal doubles competition.

The deciding point came down to No. 2 doubles pair junior Victoria LoBosco (Glendale, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and Pierre who teamed up to earn their second doubles win of the year taking a 7-6 lead late in the match before CCNY tied it up forcing a tiebreaker. In the extra frame with the match on the line, LoBosco and Pierre buckled down and fought off their nerves to take the tiebreaker 7-3 leaving the Beavers mystified. Also picking up a win at No. 3 doubles was Lavelle and partner freshman Madeline Moravek (Whitestone, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) who rolled over their opponents earning an 8-1 victory.

In singles play, St. Joseph's was led by Pierre who picked up a 10-6 victory at No. 3 singles in the closest singles match of the night. Lavelle earned a 10-3 triumph, her first of the year, at No. 5 singles and freshman Mary Edward (Glendale, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) notched a shutout winning 10-0 at No. 6 singles for the first singles win of her career.

The Lady Bears look to build off the win as they take on HVIAC foe Pratt Institute on Friday, October 18th at the USTA National Tennis Center. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
