Total Team Effort Nets First Win for Coach Drossman and Women’s Tennis

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's tennis team surrendered no more than two games in each of their eight flight wins in cruising to an 8-1 non-conference triumph over The College of New Rochelle on Thursday afternoon, the first collegiate victory for first-year head coach Daniel Drossman.

SJC Highlights

  • St. Joseph's raced out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping the opening doubles matches, closing out each match at love, 8-0.
  • In singles action, seniors Mary Edward and Kathryn Brucas both notched 10-0 triumphs at No. 2 singles and No. 4 singles, respectively. For Edward, it was her first win of the season and 10th of her career and for Brucas it's her team-leading third of the season.
  • At the top of the lineup, sophomore Denise Trerotola triumphed 10-1 and Daniella Alva won by the same margin at No. 3 singles for her first career singles win and earned the deciding point for the Bears.
  • Senior Brianna Vurckio also secured her first career singles win with a 10-2 triumph in the No. 6 singles position.
  • Katie Wenzler played a hard-fought match at No. 5 singles and was edged out 11-9, but the junior teamed up with Vurckio at No. 3 doubles and contributed a point to the victory.

The Bear Facts

  • Edward is just the 8th Bear to reach double-digit singles victories in program history. She needs one more to move into a six-way tie for third and two more to move into a tie for second.
  • The last Bears victory by seven points or more occurred in a 9-0 shutout of York on October 14, 2014.
  • The win snaps a 16-match skid dating back to last season with their last victory also coming over the Blue Angels.
  • St. Joseph's levels the all-time series that dates back to 2005 at 6-6 with their former Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rivals.

  • Riding their first win of the season, St. Joseph's resumes Skyline Conference play on Saturday, October 1, playing Farmingdale State College on the road starting at noon.
