Women's Volleyball Defeated by Ramapo and Mount Saint Vincent

RIVERDALE, NY – Behind a trio of double-double performances from seniors Yliane Ulloa (Queens, NY/Midwood) and Melissa Simo (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood), and junior Kim Matthews (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney), the St. Joseph's College women's volleyball took host Mount Saint Vincent to the limit falling in five sets on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Bears were overpowered by Ramapo losing 3-0 earlier in the day.

In the opening match, Ramapo (12-2) held St. Joseph's to under 12 points in each set, winning the match by the scores of 25-9, 25-11, 25-11. The Lady Bears struggled offensively committing more attack errors (29) than kills (14) while the Roadrunners made only five attack errors all match. Ulloa paced the offense with six kills, adding nine digs. Senior Kathy McCarthy (Breezy Point, NY/Fontbonne Hall) tallied four kills with eight digs.

St. Joseph's fared much better against Mount Saint Vincent (8-6) taking the match to a deciding fifth-set for the third time in their last four matches. The match see-sawed from set to set with Dolphins taking the first and third sets and the Lady Bears taking the second and fourth sets. In each set, the winning team took early advantages which they carried into a set victory.

The final set was highly contested with both squads exchanging the lead back and forth until the 8-8 mark. Mount Saint Vincent won four straight points to pull away from St. Joseph's which they maintained to close out the 25-20, 18-25, 25-11, 15-25, 15-10 victory.

Ulloa and Matthews paced the Lady Bears with a match-high 12 kills apiece. Matthews added a career-high 20 digs en route to her third double-double. Ulloa added 14 digs for her second double-double this season. Simo handed out 29 assists with 15 digs for her second double-double. McCarthy chipped in six kills and 14 digs.

St. Joseph's (3-10, 1-1 HVWAC) resumes conference play on Tuesday, October 5th for a road tilt against defending HVWAC champions College of New Rochelle starting at 7 p.m. at the CNR Wellness Center.
