Volleyball Levels Record, Dismisses Medgar Evers to Remain Undefeated at Home

BROOKLYN, NY – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team returned to .500 and remained undefeated at home dropping Medgar Evers College in straight sets, 3-0 (25-10, 25-6, 25-9). The Lady Bears assembled a potent attack putting away 33 kills and hitting a season-high .509.

St. Joseph's (5-5, 0-0 HVWAC) remained in control from the opening serve never trailing in the entire contest. After a 5-5 tie in the opening set, the Lady Bears went on a 6-1 run, prompting a Medgar Evers timeout and St. Joseph's never looked back taking early leads in each of the following two frames.

Senior outside hitter Kim Matthews (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) paced the Lady Bears with a 12 kill, 11 dig double-double. Matthews hit .476 for the match and added four aces. Senior Kathy McCarthy (Breezy Point, NY/Fontbonne Hall) and freshman Nicole Rios (Astoria, NY/Mary Louis) chipped eight kills and two aces apiece and combined to hit .625. Sophomore setter Sabrina Cornia (Miller Place, NY/Miller High) guided the offense dishing out 23 assists.

Medgar Evers (0-9, 0-3 CUNYAC) was led by Catheline Joseph who had three kills and four digs.

St. Joseph's has a short rest period returning to action tomorrow night against another CUNYAC foe Lehman College starting at 7 p.m. The Lady Bears will look to avenge a straight-set loss to the Lightning at the Old Westbury tri-match this past weekend.
