Lady Bears go 2-1 at St. Joseph’s College, Patchogue Invitational

PATCHOGUE, NY – St. Joseph's women's volleyball played three matches in two days going 2-1 for the weekend at the St. Joseph's College Invitational. Senior Kim Matthews (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) led the team with 26 kills and 36 digs over the three games and finished with two double-doubles.

The Lady Bears (8-7) opened the tournament with a rematch against York. St. Joseph's defeated York 3-0 in their home opener back in September. After splitting the first two sets, the Lady Bears took the next two for a 3-1 win. Matthews and Kathy McCarthy (Breezy Point, NY/Fontbonne Hall) each had a match-high 12 kills and Matthews notched 11 digs for her first of two double-doubles on the weekend.

St. Joseph's tried to carry their momentum into game two of their tournament against Skyline Conference opponent Farmingdale State. The Lady Bears fought hard, but ultimately lost 3-0 to the Rams. The Rams' Holly Sahner finished with a match-high 16 kills and her teammate, Dominique Cunningham added 13.

The Lady Bears battled the only other Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference opponent, Sarah Lawrence, in their third match of the weekend. St. Joseph's took the first two sets, 25-14, 25-19 before dropping the third 21-25 but regrouped with a 25-19 win in the fourth set to win the match. Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic's) set a career high with 12 kills and finished with her first career double-double adding 12 digs. McCarthy led the match with a season-high 17 digs and Matthews earned her second double-double of the tournament with 11 kills and 15 digs.

For the three game span McCarthy finished with 18 kills and 26 digs while Moran added 22 kills, 20 digs and her first career double-double. Setter Sabrina Cornia (Miller Place, NY/Miller High) dished out 72 assists and Nicole Rios (Astoria, NY/Mary Louis) chipped in with 15 kills.

The Lady Bears begin a stretch of six games in seven days with a home match against New Jersey City Monday, October 17. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
