Lady Bears Open Season With Straight Set Victory Over Cooper Union

NEW YORK, NY – The St. Joseph's College women's volleyball team began their 2011 campaign with a 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-22, 25-5) over Cooper Union on Friday evening.

Senior outside hitter Kim Matthews (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) led the Lady Bears putting away 13 kills with six aces and four digs. Sophomore Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic's) added seven kills with a pair of aces and a block assist.

Rookie sophomore setter Sabrina Cornia (Miller Place, NY/Miller High) controlled the offense nicely in her first collegiate game, handing out 28 assists and serving 15 straight points in the dominating third set victory.

St. Joseph's (1-0) returns to action on Tuesday, September 13 travelling to Morristown, NJ for a non-conference tilt against former Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference rival College of St. Elizabeth. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
