Lady Bears Volleyball Downs Staten Island in Four

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Three Lady Bears finished with double digit kills as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team defeated the College of Staten Island, 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 25-15), on Thursday night at the CSI Sports and Recreation Center.

Junior Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic's) put away a career-high 16 kills and had four aces to lead the St. Joseph's (6-1) offensive attack.  Freshman Lauren GaNun (Breezy Point, NY/Fontbonne Hall) added 14 kills and hit a team-leading .344 and added two blocks. Senior Kim Matthews (Breezy Point, NY/Bishop Kearney) posted her second straight double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs.

Junior Sabrina Cornia (Miller Place, NY/Miller) dished out a season-high 39 assists to go along with seven digs and a career-high three blocks.  Freshman Anna Carbone (Ozone Park, NY/Mary Louis) led the Lady Bear defense with 16 digs while sophomore Nicole Rios (Astoria, NY/Mary Louis) contributed 14 digs.

Staten Island (2-7) was led by Selma Kolenovic who tallied a team-high 12 kills. Jean Marie Lewandowski anchored the Dolphin defense with a match-high 26 digs and Jennifer Samuel handed out 23 assists.

The Lady Bears captured the opening set with a 5-0 run behind the service of Jennifer Moncino (Ridgewood, NY/Archbishop Molloy) to take a 23-20 lead, holding on for the 25-21 victory.

The second set was the most contested featuring 16 ties and 10 lead changes with the Dolphins squeaking out their only set victory winning the final two points after neither squad could more than a one point lead after the 5-5 mark of the frame.

Both teams dueled again in the third set finding themselves tied 19-19, before St. Joseph's finished with a 6-1 run, GaNun contributing a block and two kills to close out the set.

The Lady Bears fired on all cylinders in the fourth set, with all six starters recording a kill and combining for 17 against only two attack errors for an efficient .441 hitting percentage. St. Joseph's jumped out to a 16-10 lead with a  6-1 run and the Dolphins could never close the gap.

St. Joseph's hits the road again, travelling to Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts to face Pine Manor College on Saturday, September 29th at 1 p.m.
