BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team remained perfect in Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference play taking a straight-set victory, 3-0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-20), over borough foes Medgar Evers College on Wednesday evening.

The win boosts St. Joseph's (7-2, 2-0 HVWAC) into a three-way tie for first place in the HVWAC standings with Sarah Lawrence and New Rochelle.

St. Joseph's was paced by the trio of Kim Matthews (Breezy Point, NY/Bishop Kearney), Nicole Rios (Astoria, NY/Mary Louis) and Lauren GaNun (Breezy Point, NY/Fontbonne Hall) who combined for a .327 hitting percentage and producing 21 of the Lady Bears 29 kills. Matthews and Rios had eight kills apiece to share match-high honors, Matthews also handing out six assists with 11 digs, Rios contributing on the defensive end with 21 digs.

GaNun and Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic's) each had five kills, GaNun hitting an efficient .500 without an attacking error.  Anna Carbone (Ozone Park, NY/Mary Louis) anchored the defense with a career-high 23 digs while Sabrina Cornia (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place HS) directed the offense with 14 assists.

Medgar Evers (0-13, 0-4 HVWAC) was led by Catheline Joseph who tallied six kills with two blocks.

The Lady Bears cruised to victory in sets one and two, holding the Cougars to only 21 points combined.

St. Joseph's jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the third set, but Medgar would fight back and both squads would go back-and-forth until the later parts of the set. The Cougars took a slim 20-19 lead before the Lady Bears won the final six points of the set on the service of Jennifer Moncino (Ridgewood, NY/Archbishop Molloy) to seal the victory.

The Lady Bears have a quick turnaround returning to action tomorrow night facing the College of Mount Saint Vincent for a non-conference road match starting at 7 p.m.
