Women's Volleyball Notches Straight-Set Win Over Staten Island

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Led by a pair of double-digit kill performances from senior Megan Moran (Syosset, N.Y./St. Dominic's) and sophomore Lauren GaNun (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall), the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team notched a straight-set victory (25-20, 26-24, 25-17) over the College of Staten Island on Tuesday night at Brooklyn Technical High School.

St. Joseph's improves to 2-3 on the season snapping a three-match losing streak while Staten Island falls to 4-6 and have now lost two matches in a row following a two-match winning streak.

Moran led the Lady Bears offensive attack putting down a career-high 18 kills, hitting an efficient .341 in the process. GaNun, who was announced AD3I Player of the Week earlier in the day, was right behind tallying 16 kills with a .293 hitting percentage. St. Joseph's defense was led by sophomore Anna Carbone (Ozone Park, N.Y./Mary Louis) and junior Jennifer Moncino (Ridgewood, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) who recorded 18 and 14 digs respectively. Senior Sabrina Cornia (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller) helped direct a Lady Bears offense that finished the night with 45 kills and a .231 hitting percentage with her 35 assists and 15 digs.

Staten Island was led by Pola Poskrobko who fell a kill and dig shy of a double-double finishing with nine kills and nine digs.

In the opening set, the Dolphins built an early 6-5 lead but St. Joseph's would score four out of the next five points to take a 9-7 lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of set.

The second stanza was a set of runs that saw the Lady Bears build the early lead this time around taking an early 3-0 lead but Staten Island responded with a 13-5 run that gave them a 13-8 advantage midway through the set. St. Joseph's countered with five points in a row to tie the set at 13-13 helped by three kills from Moran.

The Dolphins responded with a 10-5 run that gave them a 23-18 advantage forcing a Lady Bears timeout. Things did not look well coming out of the timeout for St. Joseph's as the very next point went to Staten Island on a bad set bringing them to within one point of winning the set and tying the match with five sets looking like a possibility. However, the Lady Bears had different plans finishing the set on a 8-0 run feeding off the energy from the crowd and leaving the Dolphins stunned.

Staten Island would not be able to regroup from the tough second set loss and St. Joseph's took advantage building an 18-10 lead late in the period and would not be threatened by the Dolphins again.

St. Joseph's concludes their five-match homestand as they face The King's College in their opener in the newly rebranded Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) on Thursday, September 26th at Brooklyn Technical High School with first serve slated for 7:30 p.m.
