Women's Volleyball Completes Perfect Season in HVIAC Play With Sweep of Sarah Lawrence

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Powered by a match-high 13 kills from senior Megan Moran (Syosset, N.Y./St. Dominic's), the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team concluded Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) play and celebrated Senior Night with a dominating 3-0 (25-8, 25-6, 25-5) win over Sarah Lawrence College on Tuesday night at Brooklyn Technical High School.

Seniors Sabrina Cornia (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller) and Phia Martinez (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) along with Moran were honored after the match for their accomplishments over their careers as members of the Lady Bears.

St. Joseph's (12-7, 3-0 HVIAC) concludes HVIAC play with an unblemished record for the second straight season and has now won three matches in a row while Sarah Lawrence (3-24, 1-6 HVIAC) finishes their season having lost their last six matches.

USCAA, AD3I and HVIAC Player of the Week sophomore Lauren GaNun (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) recorded ten kills for her seventh straight match with ten or more kills. Cornia concluded her career at Brooklyn Tech dishing out 25 assists while accumulating a career-high nine service aces. Martinez tallied four digs, two service aces and an assist to close out her career at home.

The Gryphons were led by Clarisse Taboy who had a team-high-tying three kills to go along with a team-high seven digs.

The Lady Bears dominated right from the get go as they only trailed once in the entire match with that being a 2-1 deficit early in the second set.  St. Joseph's offense clicked on all cylinders as they hit a season-high .453 finishing with 35 kills and a season-high 23 service aces.

The opening stanza saw the Lady Bears hold a modest lead at 9-5 in the early stages of the contest before St. Joseph's would score ten unanswered, helped by three kills from GaNun, to take a 19-5 lead and coasted the rest of the way to take a 1-0 advantage in the match.

The second set saw Sarah Lawrence build their first and only lead of the match at 2-1.  However, it didn't last long as the Lady Bears scored nine in a row, due in part to a pair of kills from Moran, to take a 10-2 lead and they would not look back as they closed the set on a 6-0 run after the score was 19-6.

St. Joseph's looked to shut the door on the Gryphons and they did just that opening the third set on a 15-0 run helped by four Moran kills and seven aces by Cornia. The Lady Bears went into cruise control and kept a sizeable lead throughout the set finishing on a 6-0 run to send Sarah Lawrence home with a defeat.  

St. Joseph's has a quick turnaround as they travel to borough rival Brooklyn College tomorrow, October 23rd to take on the Bulldogs in their regular season finale at 7 p.m.
