Women's Volleyball Levels Record With Balanced Attack in Straight-Set Win over Medgar Evers

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Freshman Valentina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) served up nine aces and had a match-high nine digs to lead the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team to a straight-set win over borough foes Medgar Evers College.

How It Happened

  • With the game separated by two, 7-5, in the opening set, the Bears used a 6-1 run to break away from the visitors and take control of the set. Nina DiCioccio later slammed three straight kills to solidify the lead.
  • The Bears jumped out to early leads in the final two frames. Samanatha Cacace planted four kills in set two alone, matching her previous career best, en route to setting a new high with seven kills.

For the Bears

  • Freshman Valentina Urgo came up one ace and one dig shy of her first career double-double. She also stuffed the lone block in the contest.
  • Sophomore Nina DiCioccio led all attackers with eight kills against only two errors for a .333 hitting percentage and also landed five aces for 13 points.
  • Senior Samantha Cacace also hit .333 en route to her career-high seven kills. She also handed out three assists and brought up seven digs to aid the defense.
  • Alanna Palomino handed out 21 assists and directed the squad to a .278 hitting with a season-high-tying 30 kills. Eight different Bears recorded a kill in the match.
  • Briana Marrazzo added four kills and seven digs.
  • Elizabeth Quahliero, Caitlyn Staab and Urgo all chipped in three kills each.

The Bear Facts

  • St. Joseph's wins their eighth straight over their Brooklyn rivals and improves to 15-3 in the all-time series. The squads will meet again in two weeks on October 11 for the back end of a home-and-home series.
