Women's Volleyball Set to Take On SJC Long Island in First Round of Skyline Championship

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — With a sweep of their Skyline Conference tri-match in their regular season finale on Sunday, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team (12-10, 5-5 Skyline) has clinched the final seed in the Skyline Championship giving them their first postseason berth since joining the conference. The No. 6 seed Bears will take on sibling rival No. 3 seed SJC Long Island in a first-round matchup on Tuesday, October 30 at 8 p.m. in Patchogue.

The Bears mounted a five-set comeback victory over Farmingdale State—their first in six meetings against the Rams since 2008—and swept Yeshiva to bring their league record to 5-5 and secure a spot in the playoffs.

At the end of the regular season, rookie Cristina Morales (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) leads the squad with 204 kills which place her eighth among the conference's leaders. Fellow rookie Makayla Beehler (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) has dished out 451 assists ranking her fifth in the league and served up 64 aces, ranked third in the Skyline. On the defensive side, junior Briana Marrazzo (East Elmhurst, N.Y./St. John's Prep) has brought up 246 digs, most on the team, which is 10th in the Skyline.

In their only meeting of 2018 (Sep. 27), the Golden Eagles swept the Bears in straight sets. LI held the Bears to a .031 hitting percentage and out-killed the Bears 41-20.

No. 2 Mount Saint Mary (18-13, 8-2 Skyline) awaits Tuesday's winner in a semifinal matchup on Thursday in Newburgh at 7 p.m.
