Women’s Volleyball Drops Three-Set Heartbreaker to Farmingdale State

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — In a matchup that pitted the two sides tied for sixth place in the Skyline standings, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team (7-9, 4-4 Skyline) were on the losing end of a sweep against Farmingdale State College (13-12, 4-4 Skyline), falling 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-22) on Monday night from The Hill Center.

How it Happened
Kills by Briana Marrazzo (East Elmhurst, N.Y./St. John's Prep) and Julie Boyd (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) saw the Bears take an early 4-3 lead in the opening set. The subsequent ten points saw six ties and three lead changes. During that run, the Bears took the lead three times, all courtesy of FSC attack errors. By the end of the run, the Rams held a 9-8 lead that would slip away at 10-10 before regaining it shortly thereafter. The Rams eventually led by ten, 24-14, their largest lead of the set. The Bears cut their deficit to 24-17 before the visitors capped off the set with a 25-17 win.

For the better part of the second set, both sides exchanged leads of no more than two points. Sophomore middle hitter Cristina Morales (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) added to her team-leading 110 kills with four in the set with her fourth kill resulting in set point, 24-22. However, Farmingdale State clawed back with four-straight kills to take the middle set, 26-24.

The Rams led throughout the entire third set, but the Bears cut the deficit to one on three separate occasions early on. Following a kill by Ayomide Adeoye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow), which saw the navy and gray trail by one, FSC started distancing themselves holding a nine-point lead at 23-14. The Bears then carried out an 8-1 run thanks to a pair of kills by Marrazzo and a kill and ace by Morales. Following a Farmingdale State timeout with the Bears down by two, 24-22, the Rams sealed the three-set victory, outlasting St. Joseph's 25-22.

For the Bears

  • Marrazzo and Morales led the way with seven kills each for a combined 14.
  • Freshman Carol Melo's (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) 17 digs led the team in the category for the second-consecutive game.
  • Fellow rookie Kaitlyn Intindola (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) collected 18 assists.
