Women's Volleyball Celebrates Senior Night Against First-Place Manhattanville

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team lost a Skyline Conference matchup in straight sets (9-25, 15-25, 14-25) against Manhattanville College on Tuesday night. It was Senior Night for the Bears, as they honored fourth-year players Briana Marrazzo (East Elmhurst, N.Y./St. John's Prep) and Valentina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep)  playing in their final home match at The Hill Center.

How it Happened

The Bears (7-12, 4-6 Skyline) opened the scoring in the first frame with a kill by Marrazzo, who was set up by Kaitlyn Intindola (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney). Manhattanville (21-5, 10-0 Skyline) fired off a 5-0 run, to which SJC answered with a 4-1 run of their own, trailing 6-5. The Valiants then pulled away, scoring 14 of the next 16 points, taking a 20-7 lead that would not be surrendered.

Behind 9-4 in the second set, the Bears later managed to rally within three at a score of 14-11. In the next ralley, Intindola found Teuta Hoxha (Kew Gardens, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan), who slammed home a kill to bring St. Joseph's within two. The next point saw Hoxha and Cristina Morales (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) team up for an emphatic block, bringing the score to 14-13. Marrazzo kept the momentum in the Bears favor, serving up an ace, leveling the score and bringing the home crowd to their feet. Manhattanville put any comeback hopes out of reach, as they responded to the tie with an 11-1 run to earn the second set win.

A 10-3 run in the third stanza gave the Valiants a healthy 16-6 cushion as they maintained their unblemished league record.

  • Marrazzo led the attack with two kills, two aces, and a block.
  • Morales chipped in three kills and five digs.
  • Hoxha contributed with three kills of her own, adding three digs.
  • Intindola handed out nine assists and collected 11 digs.
  • Carol Melo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) led the team with 13 digs.
