Women’s Volleyball Downs Old Westbury On The Road

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. —  The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball rallied after dropping the opening set to defeat SUNY College at Old Westbury, 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-20), on Monday evening at Farmingdale State College.

The Bears (3-2, 1-1) notch their first victory in Skyline play and snap a two-game skid after back-to-back, five-set losses.

Freshman Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) led the Bears with a match-high-tying 10 kills with 14 digs and four aces. Senior Cristina Morales (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) had six blocks (four solo), also landing three kills and as many aces. Sophomore Grace Kane (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) had 21 digs and added five kills.

How it Happened

Old Westbury (1-4, 0-2) used a 6-0 run early in the first to build a 9-5 lead and never trailed again. Clinging on to an 18-16 advantage, the Panthers closed out the opening set on a 9-2 spurt.

The Bears took an early lead in the 2nd and led by as many as four on multiple occasions and as late as 19-15 before the Panthers drew even at 20-all. But back-to-back kills from Kane and Urgo jumpstarted a 5-2 run to close out the frame with Ayomide Adeoye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) sealing the set with a kill.

SJC used a 6-0 spurt to build an 11-5 lead in the third stayed on top for good. The Panthers came as close as 21-19 before the Bears won the final four points with back-to-back aces by Morales closing out the stanza.

The navy and gray used a 4-0 run in the fourth to build a 16-11 lead but the Panthers clawed within one at 18-17 and both squads exchanged four-straight sideouts to remain a one-point set at 20-19. But the Bears put the game away with a 5-1 run to close out the match.

For the Bears

  • Kaitlyn Intindola (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) directed the offense with 20 assists.
  • Adeoye had four kills at a .273 clip and had two aces and three digs.
  • Caitlyn Bilbao (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) and Carol Melo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) each had 10 digs, rounding out four Bears with double-digit digs.
