Women’s Volleyball Drops Hard-Fought Four-Set Decision To John Jay

NEW YORK — In a match with three of the four sets decided by just two points, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team (3-3) came out on the wrong end of a 3-1 decision as John Jay College (4-7) won the non-conference tilt 24-26, 25-23, 25-12, 26-24 on Thursday evening.

Freshman Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) paced the Bears attack with a 12-kill, 13-dig double-double with two aces. Junior Kaitlyn Intindola (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) handed out 23 assists and landed a match-high five aces with 10 digs. Junior Carol Melo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) had a match-best 24 digs.

How it Happened

The Bears stole the opening set after trailing the entire frame and by as many as eight. John Jay earned two set points at 24-22 before the Bears erased them both and won the next two on Bloodhound miscues to take the set.

The hosts built another sizeable lead in the second stanza and by as many as eight at 24-16 before SJC mounted another late rally erasing seven set points —  Intindola serving two aces in the run — but came up just one point short of another stunner, 25-23. John Jay took command of the third again, but the Bears couldn't assemble any late heroics in the only lopsided frame of the match, 25-12.

The fourth saw the Bears on top for nearly the entire stanza racing out to a 5-1 advantage with another two aces from Intindola powering the early run. The navy and gray led by as many as six 23-17 before the Bloodhounds stormed back to close out the match on a 9-1 run and escape a fifth set.

For the Bears

  • Urgo also hit a team-high .244, committing just two errors on 41 swings.
  • Grace Kane (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) and Ayomide Adeoye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) both chipped in four kills and a block. Kane also had 10 digs to round out three with double-digit digs.
