Women's Volleyball Falls at Home to USMMA

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-11), on Wednesday evening at The Hill Center.

Trading wins and losses over their last four, the Bears drop their overall and league record to level .500 at 4-4 and 2-2 in Skyline play. The Mariners (14-3, 6-1) move into a tie for first with the win.

How it Happened

The squads battled early in the match with five ties and two lead changes. The Mariners (14-3, 6-1) used a 6-1 run to take a 10-6 lead before SJC clawed back sparked by a Caitlyn Bilbao (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) ace and a Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) kill that cut the Bears deficit to 12-10. But the visitors pulled away with a 7-2 run and maintained their distance.

USMMA used early runs in the second and third sets to build a six-point lead and the Bears were unable to chip away at the deficit.

For the Bears

  • Urgo hit .211 on the night and put down seven kills to lead the Bears attack for the fourth straight match. But she saw her streak finishing with double-digit kills snapped at three.
  • Grace Kane (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) had four kills and anchored the defense with nine digs.
  • Cristina Morales (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) chipped in a pair of kills.
