Mount Saint Mary Stymies Women’s Volleyball
NEWBURGH, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to Mount Saint Mary College, 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-14) on Thursday evening in Skyline Conference play.
Senior Cristina Morales (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) led the attack with five kills and added a solo block. Junior Carol Melo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) brought up a match-high 25 digs.
How It Happened
Mount Saint Mary (10-9, 4-4) opened the match on a 14-1 spurt to set the tone for the night and controlled all three sets.
The Bears managed a small lead early in the second stanza on a Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) service ace — one of her match-high-tying three aces. SJC took the first point of the third set before the Knights pulled away again.
For the Bears
- Urgo paired her three aces with three kills to match Morales with six points each on the evening.
- Grace Kane (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) and Teuta Hoxha (Kew Gardens, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan) had two kills each.
- Urgo and Kane had 11 digs each to join Melo as three in double-figures.
- Caitlyn Bilbao (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) dished out nine assists.
