Women’s Volleyball Turned Away by SJC Long Island

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. —  The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team fell to their sibling rivals St. Joseph's College (Long Island) in straight sets, 25-23, 25-20, 25-15, on the road on Tuesday evening.

Grace Kane (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) led the offense with nine kills while Cristina Morales (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) and Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) added six kills each.

How it Happened

After losing the first five points of the match and falling behind by as many as eight, the Bears (5-10, 3-7) mounted a furious late comeback assembling a 9-2 spurt to pull within one, 24-23, but fell just short of stealing the set.

The Bears carried some momentum from the opener into the second stanza and used a 6-0 run to build an early 10-7 lead. Brooklyn still remained ahead at 16-13 before the Golden Eagles (9-13, 6-4) reversed the frame with a 10-1 rally.

The navy and gray couldn't overcome another slow start to open the third, falling behind 10-1 and unable to claw back into the set like in the first.

For the Bears

  • Kane's nine kills paced the attack for the third time this season and she also brought up five digs.
  • Morales had just one attack error and finished with .217 hitting and anchored the defense with 16 digs.
  • Urgo also had nine digs and landed one aces.
  • Kaitlyn Intindola (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) handed out 20 assists and lifted seven digs.
