Women's Volleyball Cruise Past Maritime, Improve to 3-1 in Conference Play

BROOKLYN N.Y. — St. Joseph's University, NY (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team notched another home win, taking down SUNY Maritime College in straight sets (25-19, 25-11,25-19) on Monday night from The Hill Center.

The win is their third consecutive against Maritime dating back to their October 2019 meeting in Throggs Neck.

How it Happened

After the Privateers (2-8, 1-4 Skyline) put the Bears (4-7, 3-1 Skyline) in an early 3-1 hole to start the contest, three straight aces from Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) – along with kills from Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills), Teuta Hoxha (Kew Gardens, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan), and Kaitlyn Intindola (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) – fueled a 13-3 run for the navy and gray. Leading by nine, 22-12, seven of the next 10 points went the way of the visitors, trimming the SJBK lead to 24-19. A service error gave the Bears the opening set.

The Bears began the second stanza with a commanding 7-1 advantage and led by as many as 13. Claiming the set 25-11, Rachel Meltsin (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) was responsible for three of the team's six service aces while Poppett and Intindola combined for four kills in the frame.

St. Joseph's began the third set going on an 8-2 run behind a pair of Poppett kills and as many Urgo service aces. Down 16-11, the Privateers clawed back to within a pair, 16-14, behind a pair of aces from libero Victoria Cordero. However, the Bears ended the match on the offensive with Urgo and Ayomide Adeoye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) each slamming home a pair of kills to take the set 25-19 and the match in straight sets.

For the Bears

  • Urgo recorded five service aces, one shy of her season high recorded in the season opener. She also finished with five kills and nine digs.

  • Poppett totaled six kills, a pair of digs and an ace.

  • Meltsin dished out 17 assists, brought up five digs, and served up four aces. It is the fourth time this season she's totaled 15+ assists.
