Women's Volleyball Suffers Setback Against USMMA

Kings Point, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, NY (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team dropped a straight-set road decision to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 3-0 (25-9, 25-17, 25-13) in the Skyline Conference match on Wednesday evening.

How it Happened

The Bears (4-8, 3-2) trailed the first set after going down 3-0 to start, getting their first point on a USMMA (8-4, 5-1) attack error. Jillian McGinty (Glendale, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan), Kaitlyn Intondola (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney), and Teuta Hoxha (Kew Gardens, N.Y. / Queens Metropolitan) all logged kills but the set ended 25-9 in favor of the Mariners.

The Bears took their first lead of the day to start out the second set with a kill by Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep). With USMMA leading 7-6 in a back and forth set, the hosts went on a seven point run to expand their lead. With the Mariners up 23-11, the Bears made one last push to close the gap thanks in large part to three kills, two from Hoxha, and a service ace by Intindola, before ultimately falling 25-17.

St. Joseph's quickly fell behind 1-5 in the third set. The team chipped away and kept things close with four kills from Urgo, never falling more than four points behind, 13-17. Unfortunately, USMMA went on to grab eight unanswered points to drop the final set 25-13 and the match 3-0.

For the Bears

  • Urgo led the team with 6 kills, adding 11 digs.

  • Hoxha earned 4 kills and a dig

  • Carol Melo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) brought up 13 digs

  • McGinty finished with three kills and two digs

  • Rachel Meltsin (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) dished out 14 assists and had six digs.
