Women’s Volleyball Comes Up Short in Hard-Fought Contest with Mount Saint Mary

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, NY (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team fell on Thursday night to Mount Saint Mary College 3-0 (25-27, 18-25, 23-25).

How it Happened

The Bears (4-9, 3-3) jumped out to a 4-0 lead. The Knights (8-10, 3-3) would play catch up, forcing five ties before taking the lead at 12-11, ultimately growing to 15-12. Trailing 15-17, the navy and gray rang off five-straight points to lead by three, 20-17. Carol Melo's (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) service ace brought the Bears to set point but a 7-1 run closed out the set in favor of the visitors, 25-27.

Kaitlyn Intindola (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) picked up back-to-back kills to give SJBK an early 2-1 edge to start the second. Despite the Bears drawing level twice, it proved to be their only lead as the Knights held on to the advantage for much of the set; leading by as many as seven, 14-21. MSMC took the set, 18-25. Ayomide Adeoye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) also picked up a pair of kills in the second.

After taking the opening point of the third, the Knights took advantage of attacking miscues to lead 1-7. The deficit became 2-11 following a timeout but the Bears offense shook off those earlier errors and put up five kills, propelled by three from Intindola, and a pair of aces to flip the advantage their way, 15-13. Intindola and Adeoye continued to lead the SJBK attack, combining for nine kills in the stanza. Kills from Intindola and Teuta Hoxha (Kew Gardens, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan) tied the set at 23 but Mount Saint Mary took the final two points and the set.
