Women's Volleyball Caps Off Campaign with 3-0 Win Over Purchase

PURCHASE, N.Y. — In their final match of the 2022 season, the St. Joseph's University, NY (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team earned a 3-0 victory (25-14, 25-20, 25-17) over Purchase College on Thursday night.

How it Happened

The Panthers (3-18,2-9) held a brief 3-2 lead in the opening set before the Bears (6-12,5-6) went on a 8-2 run behind kills from Kaitlyn Intindola (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) and Ayomide Adeoye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow). A trio of kills from Jillian McGinty (Glendale, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan) further increased the lead to 16-6. An additional pair of kills from Adeoye concluded a 25-14 set win.

The two sides alternated leads to begin the second set. Trailing 13-12, the Bears picked up 11 of the next 13 points, thanks in large part to a combined three aces from Intindola and Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep). The hosts brought the set to 23-19 but were unable to add further damage, falling 25-20.

Purchase opened the third set with a 6-4 advantage. Kills from Intindola and McGinty brought the Bears in front for the first time in the period, 8-6. There were three more ties in the set but the Panthers were unable to capitalize, ultimately falling 16-11. Five Bears would then record kills, capped off by back-to-back kills from Urgo and Adeoye to win the set 25-17 and the match in straight sets.

For the Bears

  • Intindola dished out 14 assists to go with 11 digs and five kills. The setter concludes her career with 874 assists 4.94 assists per set, good for fourth in program history in each category.
  • Adeoye posted seven kills, an ace, and three blocks. With 62 blocks, the middle blocker places eighth in Bears history.
  • Carol Melo's (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) 12 digs brought her to 320 this season, good for second best in a single season behind Anna Carbone's 337 in 2013.
  • Intindola, Urgo, and McGinty each had five service aces.
  • Urgo totaled nine digs and four kills while McGinty had three kills.
  • Rachel Meltsin (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) had five digs and eight assists.
