Women’s Volleyball Falls to FDU-Florham

MADISON, N.J. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team dropped a straight-set decision to Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham on Wednesday evening from the Ferguson Recreation Center; 10-25, 23-25, 14-25.

How it Happened

The Devils (5-3) nabbed the first eight points and 11 of the first 12 in the opening set. Kills by Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) and Jillian McGinty (Glendale, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan) brought the Bears (0-2) to within eight of the hosts (8-13). FDU ultimately claimed the set by 11, 25-10.

Trailing 4-3 to begin the second stanza, a string of McGinty service aces – along with kills from Rachel Guerra (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) and Martina Urgo (Astroia, N.Y./St. John's Prep) – spurred an 8-0 run to give SJBK an 11-4 lead; their first of the night. The Devils slowly clawed back before Rachel Meltsin (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) had a pair of aces of her own to put the Bears at 17-10. However, FDU went from trailing 16-20 to holding a 22-21 edge to complete their second-set comeback before narrowly winning the set, 25-23.

The Bears once again held the advantage at the beginning of the third set, 8-4. Eight unanswered points for the Devils swung the lead in their favor for good, 12-8. The four-point gap was the closest St. Joseph's came to the hosts before dropping the set, 25-14, and the match 3-0.

For the Bears

  • Guerra led the SJBK attack with five kills. Urgo had three of her own while Poppett, Meltsin, and McGinty all had two each.

  • Meltsin dished out 11 assists.

  • Carol Melo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) brought up a match-high 16 digs.

  • McGinty had three service aces, all coming in the second set.
