Women’s Volleyball Concludes Non-Conference Slate with Straight-Set Defeat to John Jay

NEW YORK — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team lost their non-conference finale to John Jay College, 3-0 (15-25, 13-25, 23-25), on Thursday evening in Midtown Manhattan.

How it Happened

The Bloodhounds (12-2) exercised their attacking prowess in the opening set, slamming 17 kills in the set. Two kills each from Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) and Jillian McGinty (Glendale, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan) weren't enough for the Bears (3-7) as they suffered a 25-15 defeat.

John Jay pulled together five kills as part of a 9-1 stretch at the start of the second stanza. A 6-0 spurt at 14-9 gave the hosts a 10-point advantage, 19-9. McGinty and Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) each had a pair of kills in the set but the Bloodhounds claimed the set, 25-13.

The third frame saw little separation with John Jay holding a lead no greater than seven, 16-9. The Bears saw the deficit decrease throughout the remainder of the period, ultimately tying the set late on, 23-23. A pair of SJBK attack errors concluded the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-0.
