Women’s Volleyball Spreads Wealth in Win Over Yeshiva

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Eight different players aided the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team in their 3-0 win (25-14, 25-16, 15-16) over Yeshiva University on Sunday afternoon from The Hill Center. 

Rachel Guerra (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) finished with a match-best eight kills to lead the Bears' attack. Jillian McGinty (Glendale, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan) served up five aces, one shy of her season best (six vs. York).

How it Happened

Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) provided three kills during the Bears' opening 7-1 run in the first set. Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) matched Poppett's total while Mireia Alba (Barcelona, Spain) had four kills in the stanza; giving the Bears a 25-14 set win.

The navy and gray possessed a 12-point advantage late in the second frame, 20-9. Despite the Maccabees finding a rhythm late in the set, the Bears held on for 1 25-16 win behind four kills each from Guerra and Poppett.

St. Joseph's countered Yeshiva's 8-0 stretch to begin the third set with an 8-0 run of their own to even the scoreline. The span featured five McGinty aces including four straight towards the end of the stretch. There were three more ties before the Bears sealed the set, 25-16, and the match, 3-0.

For the Bears

  • Guerra had a pair of aces and digs to go with her eight kills. She also had two blocks.

  • Poppett finished with seven kills, six digs, and two aces.

  • Urgo and Alba each had six kills and two digs while combining for six aces.

  • Carol Melo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) finished with seven digs and a pair of aces.

  • Rachel Meltsin (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) had 14 assists while posting three digs and two aces.

  • McGinty provided eight assists to go with her five aces.

  • Danielle Bourne (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) had three service aces in the third set.
