Sibling School St. Joseph’s (Long Island) Bests Women’s Volleyball in Straight Sets

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team dropped a straight-set result (14-25, 20-25, 17-25) to sister school St. Joseph's (Long Island) on Tuesday evening.

How it Happened

A Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) kill was sandwiched in the middle of a Golden Eagle 7-1 stretch to begin the contest. Although the Bears managed to narrow the lead to three at 8-5, they couldn't get any closer to the hosts. Patchogue seized control to take the opening set, 25-14.

Brooklyn began the second set with a 2-1 advantage but the Golden Eagles swung the lead back in their favor. Following a 16-10 deficit and a timeout, the navy and gray closed the gap to one, 16-15, with Urgo serving a pair of aces in the span. The Bears trailed by two late on, 22-20, but ultimately fell, 25-20.

The Bears powered to a 6-1 lead to kick off the final frame as five different players recorded kills. The Golden Eagles managed to tie the set at six, the first of seven stalemates in the set. At 13-13, Patchogue finished the set on a 12-4 surge to win the set, 25-17, and the match, 3-0.
