Women's Volleyball Secures Senior Night Sweep of Purchase

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team celebrated Senior Night with a 3-0 sweep of Purchase College (25-8, 25-21, 25-16) on Thursday afternoon from The Hill Center. Rachel Guerra (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) and Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) were commemorated in pre-match ceremonies.

How it Happened

The first set was highlighted by eight SJBK service aces, including three consecutive from Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep). Carol Melo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) equaled Urgo's total while Mireia Alba (Barcelona, Spain) and Danielle Bourne (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) each had one. Four different Bears slammed four kills to comfortably take the opening stanza, 25-8.

Despite three ties in the second set, the Panthers' early lead in the second set quickly vanished. However, the Bears led by no more than five in the period. The attacking duo of Urgo and Alba combined for six kills to escape the set on top, 25-21.

The third frame saw little separation to start before Alba's seven kills led the way to a 25-16 set win and a 3-0 match victory. Poppett served a pair of aces, including the match-clinching point.

For the Bears

  • Seniors Poppett and Guerra combined for six kills and as many digs.
  • Alba finished with 10 kills and seven digs.
  • Rachel Meltsin (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) posted her second double-double of the year behind a 23-assist, 13-dig night. She also had three kills and a pair of aces.
  • Urgo totaled seven kills and nine digs.
  • Melo posted 16 digs.
  • Urgo, Alba, and Melo all had three aces.
