Urgo, Meltsin Post Double-Doubles in Women's Volleyball's Defeat to Sarah Lawrence

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team was dealt a straight-set defeat by Sarah Lawrence College (20-25, 20-25, 15-25) on Tuesday night in their final match at The Hill Center this season.

Setter Rachel Meltsin (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) logged a double-double in back-to-back matches, and for the third time this season. Outside hitter Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) finished with her second double-double of the campaign behind 11 kills and as many digs.

How it Happened

At 4-1 in the first set, the Gryphons used a seven-point swing to lead 8-4. Following a timeout, the Bears used kills from Urgo to tie the frame at 18 before trailing the visitors by one, 21-20. Mireia Alba (Barcelona, Spain), Jillian McGinty (Glendale, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan), and Rachel Guerra (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) all contributed to the attack. However, Sarah Lawrence clinched the set as they collected the final four points.

The second stanza proved to be eventful as it provided 10 ties and five lead changes. Six players notched at least one kill in the set – with Alba and McGinty combining for five – while Carol Melo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) served her second ace of the match but it wasn't enough as the set score replicated that of the first, 25-20.

Despite there being a pair of ties and lead changes early in the third set, the Gryphons held an eight-point lead, 17-9. 10 kills in the set – with Urgo and Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) totalling eight kills combined – proved to be insufficient as the Gryphons won the set by 10, 25-15, and the match 3-0.

For the Bears

  • Urgo's 11 kills were a match-high. Her 11 digs mark the fourth time she brought up double-figure digs and the second in three matches.
  • Meltsin finished with 24 assists and 11 digs. She also had a pair of kills and a service ace.
  • Melo had 16 digs and two aces.
  • Alba had five kills and three digs.
  • Poppett finished with four kills and nine digs.
