Women’s Volleyball’s Season Culminates at Mount Saint Mary

NEWBURGH, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team saw their season come to a close in a three-set defeat to Mount Saint Mary College (19-25, 13-25, 19-25) on Tuesday night from the Kaplan Center.

The Bears conclude their 2023 season with a 6-12 overall record and a 4-7 mark in Skyline Conference play.

How it Happened

The Bears possessed the lead for much of the opening set, leading by as many as four (14-10). The quartet of Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep), Rachel Guerra (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island), Mireia Alba (Barcelona, Spain), and Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) combined for eight kills in the stanza. Trailing 16-14, the Knights strung together nine unanswered points to teeter the lead in their favor, 23-16; winning the set 25-19.

The hosts ran the table in the second set as their 12-2 start to the period was too much for the Bears to overcome, claiming the set 25-13.

Apart from a pair of ties in the early portion of the third set, Mount Saint Mary held the advantage throughout the frame. Urgo slammed three kills in the set to power the attack but the Knights took the set, 25-19, and the match 3-0.
