Candelaria Named Skyline Cross Country Rookie of the Week

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Recognizing her efforts in leading St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) to a dual meet victory over Medgar Evers College, junior Kristen Candelaria (Jamaica, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) was selected as the Skyline Conference Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week as announced by the conference office earlier today.

The weekly accolade is the first garnered by an SJC Brooklyn student-athlete since joining the 11-member league this season.

Making her collegiate cross country debut on Sept. 23, Candelaria placed first overall by more than a minute with a time of 17:15 on the two-mile course at Prospect Park, leading the Lady Bears to a 24-31 dual meet victory over their borough rival Cougars.

Also receiving honor roll recognition this week from the conference is Lauren GaNun (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) and Cansu Usta (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fort Hamilton).

Over a pair of contests for the women's volleyball team last, GaNun compiled 32 kills and nine blocks, highlighted by a season-high 20-kill, 13-dig double-double against Staten Island in their home opener. The senior lands on the conference honor roll for the third straight week.

Usta exploded for six goals, matching her own program single-game record, in leading the women's soccer team to their first win of the season, defeating Medgar Evers, 16-1, last Monday. It is the first time in her career named to the league honor roll.
