2021 Skyline Baseball

  • Teams will face six Skyline opponents in a four-game series (home-and-home doubleheaders).
  • Only the first three games of the four-game series will count toward the league standings.
  • Game 1 of the series will be 7 innings. Game 2 will be 9 innings. (If game 1 goes to extra innings, game 2 will be 7 innings).
  • Game 3 (first game of 2nd doubleheader) will be 9 innings. Game 4 (the non-conference game), will be 7 innings.
  • 10-run rule after 7 innings in effect for the 9-inning games.
  • Top four teams will qualify for the 2021 Skyline Baseball Championship (May 7-9)

The Bear Facts

St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) began Skyline play last weekend against Old Westbury, dropping all four games of the series. Middle infielder Chris Leary went 2-for-5 with an RBI in the front end of the twin bill, the only Bear with a multi-hit game. Catcher Nick Tapio, who leads the team with four RBI, drove in a combined three runs in Saturday’s doubleheader against the Panthers while shortstop Lucas Collet had a pair of base knocks in both games.

Rookie Anthony Hernandez provided an offensive spark for the Bears on Sunday, going 4-for-5 in the first game and combining for five hits, a pair of RBI and runs scored, and a double on the day. He currently leads the team in hits (7) and batting average (.368).

The first game also saw senior Kevin Reyes hit SJC’s first home run of the season; belting the first pitch he saw in the ninth inning to left field. William DeLuca and Joe Grignon joined Hernandez and Reyes with multi-hit games in game one.

Louis Lombardi recorded his first hit of the season in game two against the Panthers while he and Justin Biordi had the lone RBI’s of the contest.

A win against the Merchant Marine Academy would be the first for the Bears since April 8, 2017; when SJC earned a split of a Saturday doubleheader. DeLuca was the lone Bear to feature that day, coming on to pitch an inning of relief. The senior has yet to make an appearance on the mound this season.

USMMA Update

After their 2020 season was shortened and the start to their 2021 was further delayed by a postponement, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and their 32-man roster will play ball once again this weekend. Of the eight Mariners who earned a spot on the All-Skyline Team, three — Andrew Hunt, Joe Raab, and Garrett Aichele — will all return for the new season.

All three players maintained an ERA below 3.13 on the bump with Hunt posting a 2.28, the lowest of the three. Hunt tossed 27.2 innings in 15 relief appearances, going 5-1 and picked up his lone save against Moravian College (4/23/2019). His 16 K’s, seven runs and 22 hits allowed propelled the Maryland native to Skyline First Team honors at the end of the ‘19 season.

Second Teamer Raab returns after leading the conference in strikeouts (70). The senior southpaw posted a 3.29 ERA in 52 innings pitched. His team-leading five wins on the year ranked him joint-fifth in the Skyline.

Aichele joined Raab on the Second Team. The junior made six appearances on the mound, going 25 innings with a 2-0 record and 2.52 ERA. His 29 strikeouts were good for fourth on the team. At the plate, Raab had top 10 numbers in the conference in triples (5, 2nd) and runs scored (30, 8th). His .455 slugging percentage and .322 batting average placed him in third and fifth on the Mariners, respectively.

USMMA have won five of their last six contests against St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) and enter this series on a four-game win streak against the Bears.
